Excitement surged as the 2024 International Youth Study in Shenzhen & Shenzhen University (SZU) “Summer in Liyuan” Camp officially launched yesterday during a ceremony held at SZU’s Yuehai campus in Nanshan District.

Running until Aug. 23, the summer camp has attracted 40 international youth from countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Italy, Japan, Russia, and Kazakhstan. The camp is a valuable opportunity for international students to deepen their understanding of the Chinese language and Chinese culture while experiencing the remarkable development of Shenzhen.

Some of the participants are from SZU’s Tokyo College, the university’s first overseas campus.

During the ceremony, Zhang Xiaohong, vice president of SZU, welcomed the international students on behalf of the university. She expected that students would not only successfully learn Chinese and deepen their knowledge of Chinese culture, but also build friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds during their time in Shenzhen.

International participants exchange ideas and enjoy a tea break after the opening ceremony of the summer camp.

Participants will attend Chinese language courses, visit SZU’s two campuses, engage in a variety of activities, including papercutting and Chinese tea workshops, and visit renowned companies like Tencent and BYD.

Raffi O’Callaghan, from the United Kingdom, believes this opportunity will significantly improve her Chinese and provide insight into China’s traditions, cuisine, and daily life.

Elisabeth Guarneri, from Italy, has cherished Chinese culture since she was 10 years old. Besides cultural exploration, Guarneri, a business management major, is eager to learn about Shenzhen’s technology sector.

This is Guarneri’s first visit to Shenzhen, and she is already enchanted by the city. “I told my parents yesterday that I would love to stay here for a year or a little longer to really get to know more about China and its people,” Guarneri said.

Watanabe Toshio, a student at SZU’s Tokyo College, hopes to experience an academic atmosphere and cultural diversity during the camp.
